Monarch Butterfly Tagging Season Kicks Off Saturday

Unlike most other insects in temperate climates, monarch butterflies cannot survive a long cold winter. Instead, they spend the winter in roosting spots. The monarch tagging season kicks off Saturday at 1 p.m. at Deep Creek Lake State Park. The event will also focus on the host plant of the butterfly – milkweed. DNR is working with farmers and the State Highway Administration to leave milkweed stands on power lines and flyways until later in the year. To read more about monarch tagging, visit
