Monarch Butterfly Tagging Season Kicks Off Saturday

Unlike most other insects in temperate climates, monarch butterflies cannot survive a long cold winter. Instead, they spend the winter in roosting spots. The monarch tagging season kicks off Saturday at 1 p.m. at Deep Creek Lake State Park. The event will also focus on the host plant of the butterfly – milkweed. DNR is working with farmers and the State Highway Administration to leave milkweed stands on power lines and flyways until later in the year.
